Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
The Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) policy requires everyone to wear a lab coat, safety glasses, and gloves when working in the lab. Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the lab in any situation.
Lab coats must be worn when you are in the lab for any reason, including: performing lab work, working on your computer, consulting, mentoring, or any other activity where you stop or pause in the lab, and are not exclusively walking through a lab area to an exit.Â
When wearing your lab coat, have all buttons closed and sleeves fully extended.Â
Lab coats are not allowed in clean areas, which comprise the offices, kitchens, conference rooms, restrooms, main lobby, and the extreme ends of the green mile.
Clean lab coats are provided at the lab coat stations in SB1, SB2, SB3, and Robotics. Clean lab coats belong on the hangers, dirty lab coats belong in the provided laundry bag.Â
Lab coats may be stored on one of the coat racks found throughout the lab or at your bench. If storing at a coat rack, please write your name on the label for the coat hook. Lab coats stored on unlabeled coat hooks may be collected for laundry.Â
Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the lab.
Safety glasses are available in the green 'Clean' bins at all entrances to the lab. Please place dirty safety glasses in the 'Dirty' green bins.
Additional safety glass models are available for purchase in the ESE Stockroom.
Prescription safety glasses are available at no cost to LBNL workers. A current prescription is required. If you do not have a current prescription, Health Services’ optometrist can provide this service. There is no charge for the lenses or frames, and workers are limited to one pair per year. The optometrist is available on Fridays at Health Services. Please schedule an appointment before coming to Health Services at 510-486-6266.
Due to security concerns and lack of encrypted email, please do not email any personal health information to Health Services. All health information can be mailed, hand-delivered or faxed to (510) 486-7192.
