Chemical Management
Chemical life-cycle management begins before a chemical order is placed. The downstream consequences and costs associated with expired, unused, and/or unsafe chemicals are significant. You can take action now to reduce risks by following approved chemical purchasing procedures and by:
Ordering in small volumes (purchasing larger volumes may not be economical when waste management costs are considered)
Ordering less toxic and more stable chemicals, if possible
Searching to see if the chemical is already available at ESE
Search the ESE Common Chemical Inventory
For small amounts, email the lab at ese_labs@lbl.gov to see if someone is willing to share
Placing orders through LBL e-Buy or e-Pro whenever possible
The Common Chemical Inventory tracks the chemical name, container size, and location of all chemicals located in communal storage. Please use the inventory to locate chemicals you are interested in using. The inventory does not track chemicals stored at personal lab benches or cold storage spaces. If you have any questions, please contact the Lab Ops team.
The LBNL Chemical Management System (CMS) tracks the amounts and locations of hazardous chemicals located at ESE. LBNL requires all primary containers of hazardous chemicals at ESE to have a current primary user and be registered in CMS, regardless of your institution.
Newly purchased hazardous chemicals are assigned a barcode and registered into CMS upon arrival at ESE before delivery to the user. If you find a hazardous chemical that does not have a CMS barcode, email us at jbei-lo@lbl.gov and we will register the container into CMS.
The information for personal hazardous chemicals is updated on CMS once per year during cleanup day, while the information for common hazardous chemicals is maintained by Lab Ops.
Containers must be removed from CMS when they are emptied, requisitioned, or otherwise removed from ESE. CMS barcodes should be removed from the containers and placed in containers or Zip-lock bags below the QR codes, which can be found next to the hanging colored folders at the entrances to the Synbio labs or near the common chemicals storage.
Use the QR code to remove chemicals from CMS and receive guidance on their proper disposal.
Peroxide-forming chemicals and time-sensitive chemicals cannot be kept in personal storage. They must have an identifying label, be stored in common areas, and be tested/inspected regularly. Please store them in the Peroxide-Forming/Time Sensitive Chemical cabinet storage located under chemical fume hoods in SB1, SB2, SB3, and the Chemistry lab. Notify the Lab Ops team if any containers lack a CMS barcode or the identifying label shown below.
This sticker must be applied to all peroxide forming/time sensitive chemical containers
Primary users must account for all of their chemicals before leaving ESE. Users will be sent a list of all their chemicals and must do the following:
Locate all chemicals
Donate useful chemicals and identify a new primary user
Requisition chemicals that are not going to be kept
